Internships and Volunteering

The Future Worlds Center puts enormous value in sharing its enthusiasm, energy, know-how, and experience developed over the years with the rest of the world. Therefore, we invite individuals from around the world to come and spend some time in our organisation.

We receive a lot of applications during the year and we follow a strict selection process. We strongly encourage those interested to start the application process as early as possible early. It is useful to study the philosophy, vision and mission, policies and procedures of the organisation and to draft a well-written cover letter explaining why you want to get involved in our work, and how our organisation can benefit from hosting you.

A shared belief regarding human value and the need of anti-discrimination action as well as high motivation in providing supportive services to refugees is a fundamental prerequisite for a successful internship in FWC. In that sense any academic or professional background can contribute effectively. However, due to the nature of the specific project, a background in the fields of law or social sciences can be of additional value. Therefore, people with any kind of involvement in those fields are highly encouraged to join our team.

Organisation policy on internships

Every intern has to be assigned a supervisor. A supervisor is in charge of agreeing and monitoring the schedule and workload of the intern; the intern cannot be involved in tasks assigned by other associates without prior permission of the intern’s mentor.

The intern’s mentor is responsible to follow-up the training of his/her intern, as well as to draft one’s Reference Letter at the end of the internship, which will then be signed by the Head of Unit or the Executive Director of the organisation.

Policy regarding interns’ remuneration

Our project has no funds allocated for interns. Most interns are financially supported through their sending organisations, third-party scholarships, or their families. We are happy to support the process of an intern’s application for financial support.

Policy regarding number of interns and internship durations

We wish to open our doors to as many young minds as possible. This is however not possible because an intern is not only an asset for the organisation, but also a liability, both in terms of the attention required as well as the financial costs involved. We therefore rarely accept more than one intern per unit at the same time. Furthermore, interns are not encouraged to apply for durations shorter than 6 or ideally 12 months. Such applications are approved only under extraordinary circumstances.
